Most gardens we are called to fix were designed twice: once by the previous owner, and once by an assortment of small jobs over the years that never quite added up. Putting a coherent garden together is mostly an exercise in editing - working out what to remove, what to keep, where the levels should change, and how the garden will actually be used through the year.

We have been designing and installing gardens across the West Midlands for more than 30 years. Gary handles the design himself, on site, with a tape measure and a sketch pad. We do not outsource the design and then bring in a separate installation crew - the team that draws it is the team that builds it.

What garden design with us covers

  • Free on-site consultation. Gary visits, measures, looks at sun, soil and drainage, and listens to how you actually use the garden.
  • Scale drawing. A measured plan showing patio location, paths, levels, sleeper walls, planting beds and structures. Black-and-white, readable, no theatre.
  • Material selection. Slab choice, gravel, sleepers, fencing, planting palette.
  • Itemised written quote. Materials, sub-base, drainage and labour broken out so you can see what you are paying for.
  • Installation by our own team. No subcontractors; PAYE staff on site.
  • Aftercare notes for any planting, and a written 10-year guarantee on hard landscaping.

How we approach a garden

There is no single “All Seasons style” we impose on every garden. We adapt to:

  • The architecture. A 1920s house and a 2020s house benefit from different geometries, materials and planting.
  • How you use the garden. Hosting space, children’s play, dog access, vegetable growing, working from home in a garden room - all of these influence layout.
  • Sun, soil and drainage. A south-facing dry garden plants very differently from a north-facing wet one.
  • Maintenance appetite. A low-maintenance garden is achievable, but it is designed for low maintenance from the start, not retrofitted later.

We will not push a particular look on you. Modern, traditional, cottage, Mediterranean, low-water - they all work with the right structure under them.

What a garden design from us actually looks like

We produce:

  • A measured site plan showing existing features.
  • A proposed layout plan showing the new structure - patio outline, paths, beds, levels, drainage.
  • Material specification in plain English, including supplier and range.
  • Planting palette with key plants and grouping for the main beds.
  • Optional 3D sketch for complex level changes if it helps you visualise.

We do not produce glossy CAD renderings with imaginary trees. They look great on a sales pitch and bear no relationship to the finished garden.

What it costs

Garden design is included free with installation. If you only want a design and intend to install yourself or use another contractor, design-only work starts from around £450 depending on the size and complexity of the garden.

Installation cost depends on the scope. As a guide:

  • A full back-garden makeover with patio, levelling, sleeper retaining and turf typically falls between £9,000 and £25,000.
  • Larger gardens with structures, drainage, water features or significant retaining sit above that.

Frequently asked questions

Do you only design, or do you build as well? We design and build. Most clients want both. We can also install someone else’s design if you have already worked with a separate designer.

How long does a garden makeover take? Most residential makeovers run 1 to 3 weeks on site. Larger projects run 4 to 6 weeks. We give you a planned start and finish date in writing as part of the quote.

Will you plan the planting too? Yes - we plan the planting palette and key structural plants. We source through established West Midlands suppliers. We do not do garden-maintenance rounds afterwards.

Do you offer a guarantee? Yes - a 10-year written guarantee on hard landscaping and a 12-month replacement guarantee on planting, subject to the aftercare notes provided at handover.

Can you design around an existing tree or feature? Yes - that is normally the most interesting starting point.
