A good garden looks effortless. A great garden does that for ten years. The difference is the structure under the planting: levels, falls, retaining, drainage, sub-bases and edges. Get those right and a garden settles in, ages well and stops feeling like a building site within one growing season.

We design and install gardens across Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, Birmingham and the surrounding towns. We do the hard landscaping ourselves with our own team and machinery, and we work with established planting suppliers in the West Midlands. Every project starts with a free on-site visit and a scale drawing so you can see the layout before you commit to anything.

What landscaping with us covers

  • Garden design - scale drawings, planting plans, lighting and material selection.
  • Patios - porcelain, Indian sandstone, riven concrete and reclaimed stone, laid on a full mortar bed with proper falls.
  • Garden features and sleepers - raised beds, sleeper walls, water features, pergolas and structures.
  • Ground levelling and excavation - terracing sloped gardens, raising or lowering levels, removing concrete pads and old foundations.
  • Drainage - French drains, soakaways, surface-water channels and tying into the right outfall.
  • Lawns and artificial grass - real turf where it makes sense, artificial where shade or wear make real grass a constant battle.
  • Fencing and edging - close-board, slatted contemporary fencing, sleeper edges, brick mowing strips.
  • Jet washing and maintenance - to bring tired patios and paths back to life.

How a garden project works

  1. Tell us what you want. A phone call or filled-in quote form, with rough measurements and any photos.
  2. On-site visit. Gary visits, takes measurements, looks at access and drainage, and listens to how you actually use the garden.
  3. Scale drawing. A measured plan showing the proposed layout, materials and planting zones. No three-dimensional rendering theatrics, just a clear plan you can read.
  4. Written quote, itemised. Materials, sub-base, drainage and labour broken out so you can see what you are paying for.
  5. Installation by our own team. Most residential gardens take 1 to 3 weeks depending on scale and the amount of excavation required.
  6. Aftercare notes and a written guarantee on hard landscaping. We will tell you what we have planted and how to look after it.

What we do not do

Saying what you do not do is honest, so the customers we are right for find us and the customers we are not right for save themselves a phone call.

  • We do not do small grass-cutting or weekly maintenance rounds. We are a design-and-build operation.
  • We do not do tree work that needs a qualified arborist. If your project needs a tree felling or large-crown reduction, we will recommend a local arborist we work with.
  • We do not do single small jobs like fence-panel replacement on their own. They are absorbed into larger projects.

What it costs

Landscaping budgets vary widely. As a rough West Midlands guide:

  • A standard porcelain patio of around 25 m² with proper sub-base, falls and edging starts at around £3,500.
  • A full garden makeover with levelling, patio, sleeper retaining and turf typically falls between £9,000 and £25,000.
  • Larger or sloping gardens with retaining walls, drainage and structures sit above that.

We never give a final number over the phone. The scale drawing comes with a fully itemised quote so you know exactly what you are being charged for.

Recent garden projects

We publish recent garden projects with the location, the materials used, and the brief from the owner. Where the customer is willing, we will arrange a visit to a finished garden in your area so you can see the work in person.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the garden or do I need to bring a designer? We design and build. Gary handles the layout and material selection; we produce a measured scale drawing as part of the quote. If you already have a designer or architect, we are happy to install their drawings.

Can you do retaining walls on sloping gardens? Yes, in sleepers, brick, gabion or reinforced concrete depending on the load and the look. Retaining over about 600 mm needs proper engineering, weep holes and drainage behind. We build it that way.

Do I need planning permission for a patio or garden landscaping? Most residential garden landscaping does not need planning permission. Decking and raised platforms have specific rules. Properties in conservation areas, listed buildings, and structures within 2 m of a boundary may have additional considerations. We flag any case where planning permission may be needed.

How long does a garden makeover take? Most residential makeovers run 1 to 3 weeks. Larger projects with retaining, levelling and structures can run 4 to 6 weeks. We give you a planned start and finish date in writing as part of the quote.

Do you guarantee the work? We give a written 10-year guarantee on hard landscaping (patios, retaining, sleepers, drainage). Plants have a 12-month replacement guarantee subject to the aftercare notes we provide at handover.
