A gravel driveway is the lowest-cost surface to install per square metre and the best at draining without any extra detailing. Done properly it suits rural and semi-rural properties, period homes and longer driveways. Done badly it ruts, weeds grow up through it, and the stones migrate onto the lawn within a year.
The difference is whether the gravel sits on a stabilising grid over a proper sub-base, or whether it has been dumped on bare soil and raked level. We do the former.

How we build a gravel driveway that lasts
- Survey and quote. Gary inspects the existing surface, drainage and edging.
- Excavation to depth.
- MOT Type 1 or recycled hardcore sub-base compacted in layers.
- Geotextile membrane between the sub-base and the gravel layer to stop fines migrating up.
- Honeycomb stabilising grid (typically a recycled polypropylene grid) on driveways where vehicle weight or turning circles would otherwise rut the surface. The grid keeps the gravel locked in place and stops the wheel-track depressions that ruin most gravel driveways.
- Edge restraint - timber, sleeper, stone, brick or concrete edge to keep the gravel inside the driveway and off the lawn.
- Gravel top dressing - typically 20 mm pea shingle, golden gravel or local cotswold chippings depending on the look you want.
- Sign-off and written 10-year guarantee on the sub-base and edging works.
When gravel is the right choice
- Longer driveways where blocks or resin would be expensive per metre.
- Rural and semi-rural properties where the look suits the setting.
- Properties where SuDS drainage rules require a clearly permeable surface.
- Homeowners who want an audible “footsteps approaching” element for security.
When gravel is not the right choice
- Driveways with very heavy vehicles. Gravel ruts under HGV-class loads.
- Driveways with steep slopes. Gravel migrates downhill.
- Wheelchair use or pushchairs as a daily route. Gravel is hard to push across.
- Owners who do not want to occasionally rake or top-up.
Gravel choices
The most popular gravel finishes in this area are:
- 20 mm pea shingle - rounded, mid-grey, traditional country look.
- Golden gravel / Cotswold buff - warm cream-yellow, suits period and limestone properties.
- Granite chippings - sharper edged, locks tightly, more contemporary look.
- Slate chippings - dark, plate-shaped, modern.
Avoid very large stones (over 30 mm) on a daily-use driveway - they move under steering and damage car paintwork at the edges.
What it costs
Gravel driveways are the lowest entry cost of the four driveway surfaces. A typical two-car gravel driveway in this area starts at around £2,500 including the proper sub-base, geotextile, stabilising grid and edging.
Avoid the very cheapest “gravel driveway” quotes you receive - they normally skip the sub-base, the grid and the edge, and the surface will fail within a season.
Frequently asked questions
Will the gravel migrate onto the lawn or pavement? Not with a proper edge restraint installed in concrete. The most common cause of gravel migration is no edge or a timber edge nailed into soft ground.
Will weeds grow through it? Not for many years if there is a geotextile membrane between the sub-base and the gravel. The membrane stops fines migrating upwards and weeds rooting downwards.
How often does gravel need topping up? Every 3-5 years, typically a thin top-dressing rather than a full re-lay. With a stabilising grid the top-up interval is longer.
Is a gravel driveway noisy on the wheels? Yes - slightly. Some owners like that as a security feature. If silence matters more, choose block paving or resin instead.
Do you offer a guarantee? We give a 10-year written guarantee on the sub-base, geotextile, grid and edging. The gravel itself is a consumable top dressing rather than a permanent surface.
