The brief

A 1990s detached property in Four Oaks with a curved frontage, a double garage and a recent rear extension. The existing concrete driveway had developed bad falls towards the porch and the kerb-line had spread. The owners wanted a single uninterrupted surface that suited the contemporary look of the new extension and dealt with surface water properly.

What we proposed

  • Porous tarmac structural base rather than concrete - permeable from the base up.
  • Daltex Autumn Gold 1-3 mm UV-stable aggregate, force-mixed with two-part UV-stable resin and trowelled in a single pour.
  • ACO HexDrain linear channel at the entrance to handle highway water.
  • Concrete-haunched edge restraint along all boundaries.
  • Three-day cure window booked in advance to ensure dry conditions for the pour.

The owners had originally asked about a very dark “anthracite” blend; we flagged the south-facing aspect of the drive and the heat absorption issue. They chose Autumn Gold instead.

How it went

DayWork
1-2Excavation, sub-base, edges, ACO trench.
3-4Porous tarmac base laid and rolled.
5-6Cure window. Drainage tie-in.
7Primer applied, resin pour completed in a single working day.
8Final cure, photography, sign-off.

The outcome

A single, smooth, permeable driveway with no joints to weed and a UV-stable surface that has held its colour through one full UK summer at the time of writing. Drainage runs to the ACO channel at the highway boundary, not back to the porch.
