Location: Lichfield (WS14)
Service: resin
Duration: 9 working days including base cure

Daltex Silver Birch resin-bound driveway in Lichfield with a darker aggregate contrast inset framing the entrance.

The brief

A relatively new contemporary property in WS14, just outside the Lichfield Cathedral Conservation Area but in a planning-sensitive street. The owners wanted a driveway that worked with the white render and slate-grey window frames, but they did not want a dark surface that would absorb summer heat or look heavy against the house. They had also been asked by the council to demonstrate permeability.

What we proposed

  • Full excavation of the original concrete.
  • Porous tarmac structural base rather than concrete; permeable from the base up so the surface meets SuDS requirements.
  • Daltex Silver Birch 1-3 mm UV-stable aggregate.
  • A small inset of a darker aggregate blend framing the entrance, to add visual definition without breaking the contemporary aesthetic.
  • ACO HexDrain linear channel at the highway boundary, tied into the existing surface-water drain.
  • Conservation-area-sensitive kerb-line matching the existing brick paviour kerbing of the neighbouring properties.

How it went

DayWork
1-2Excavation, drain trench, edge restraint.
3-4Porous tarmac base laid, primer and cure window.
5Cure continuing.
6-7Resin pour, contrast inset trowelled while still workable.
8Final cure, photography.
9Sign-off and aftercare briefing.

The outcome

Permeable driveway that satisfies the council’s SuDS requirement, suits the contemporary architecture, and has a UV-stable surface that has stayed colour-stable through two UK summers at the time of writing.
