Tarmac driveway, Walmley
The brief
A semi-detached house in Walmley with a long single driveway and a side garage. The owner runs a small trade business and needed a surface that would take a 3.5 t work van plus a family car, day in day out. The existing gravel had been topped up several times and was still migrating onto the pavement.
What we proposed
- Full excavation of the loose gravel and contaminated sub-base.
- MOT Type 1 sub-base in compacted layers.
- Binder course (AC 20 Dense) at 60 mm followed by wearing course (SMA 10) at 30 mm.
- Concrete kerb along both boundaries for edge restraint.
- Hand-finished thresholds at the garage door and porch, to avoid the brittle machine-laid edge that fails on cheap tarmac driveways.
How it went
| Day | Work |
|---|---|
| 1 | Excavation, spoil removal, kerb installation. |
| 2 | Sub-base, binder course. |
| 3 | Wearing course, hand-finishing, roller, sign-off. |
The wearing course was laid on a settled morning with the right ambient temperature; we do not lay tarmac in marginal weather.
The outcome
Hard-wearing tarmac driveway that handles daily van use, no more gravel migration onto the pavement, and a clean kerb-line that does not creep year on year. Owner has a written 10-year guarantee on the workmanship and sub-base.
